Ingredients

  • tablespoons sunflower seeds Note 2
  • 2 medium avocados
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 garlic clove grated
  • ¼ teaspoon of red chili flakes or cayenne pepper, more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspooon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Roast the sunflower seeds: Heat a small pan over medium heat. Add the seeds and roast them, shaking the pan often, until they're fragrant and golden, which should take about 2 minutes. Keep an eye on them constantly to prevent burning. Transfer them right away to a plate and let them cool while you get everything else ready.
    1½ tablespoons sunflower seeds
  • Blend the avocado pieces, garlic clove, lemon juice, and all the spices in a small blender. Alternatively, crust the avocado with a fork and stir in the grated garlic, lemon juice, and spices.
2 medium avocados + 2 tablespoons lemon juice + 1 garlic clove + ¼ teaspoon of red chili flakes + ¼ teaspoon ground coriander + ½ teaspooon ground cumin + ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt + ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Adjust the taste to your liking, you could add more lemon juice and more chili flakes or cayenne pepper.
  • Stir about ¾ of the sunflower seeds into the spread and use the rest to top the avocado dip.

Notes

  1. The avocado spread is best served immediately or within hours after preparing it. It'll still taste good for up to 2 days, but keep in mind avocados can turn brown over time.
  2. For sunflower seeds, use raw ones that you'll roast in a pan. You can leave them out and make simple and delicious guacamole instead.
