Chocolate-dipped orange slices made with fresh oranges and melted chocolate. A simple treat with just two ingredients, easy to prepare at home.

two large slices of orange coated with dark chocolate.

These chocolate-dipped oranges are a small, everyday sweet I like to make when we want something simple after dinner. Fresh oranges and melted chocolate are all you need, and the slices keep well for a few days.

I often make them in winter, when oranges are at their best. They are easy to prepare, don't need any special equipment, and are a nice way to use a few oranges without baking.

    Recipe ingredients

one orange, one blood orange and dark chocolate, all labeled.

Oranges: You can use regular oranges or blood oranges. I often mix the two when they're in season. Mandarin or clementine slices work as well, especially if you want smaller pieces.

    • If you enjoy oranges, you might also like my Orange Drizzle Cake or Blood Orange Jam.

Chocolate: Dark chocolate is my first choice here, as it melts smoothly and balances the fruit well.

    • Milk or white chocolate can be used too. If you choose milk or white chocolate, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the melted chocolate. This helps thin it slightly, so it coats the orange slices more evenly.
    • For another simple chocolate recipe, see my Bailey's Fudge Recipe.

Variations: Sprinkle a little chopped nuts or a pinch of sea salt on the chocolate before it sets for a small twist.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    How to make chocolate-dipped oranges?

orange and blood orange slices on a cutting board.

Step #1: Peel the oranges, remove most of the white pith, and separate them into slices.

chopped dark chocolate in a double boiler before melting.

Step #2: Finely chop the chocolate and melt it gently in a double boiler or in the microwave, stirring until smooth.

Step #3: Dip each orange slice halfway into the melted chocolate. Let the excess drip off.

Step #4: Place the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let the chocolate set completely.

    Tips

Make sure the oranges are as dry as possible after peeling so the chocolate sticks better.

If using milk or white chocolate, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to help it coat evenly.

Don't let the chocolate touch boiling water in a double boiler - it can seize.

Use parchment paper on the tray so the slices don't stick.ย

    Storage

Store the chocolate-dipped orange slices in an airtight container.

    • At room temperature: up to 2 days, if the room is cool.
    • In the fridge: up to 4-5 days.

If stored in the fridge, let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving so the chocolate isn't too hard.

    Serving suggestion

These chocolate-dipped oranges are perfect with tea, coffee, or as a small after-dinner treat.

    Equipment

    • 1 Pot
    • 1 Heatproof bowl
    • 1 Baking sheet
    • Parchment paper
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Ingredients

    • 2 oranges Note 1
    • 5.5 oz dark chocolate about 1 cup when finely chopped, Notes 2 and 3

    Instructions

    • Prepare the oranges: Peel the oranges. Remove as much of the thick white pith as possible, especially on the rounded outside. Separate the oranges into slices.
      2 oranges
    • Chop the chocolate very finely and place it into a heatproof bowl.
      5.5 oz dark chocolate
    • Melt the chocolate (double boiler method): Fill a pot about halfway with water. Place the bowl with the chocolate on top of the pot. The bottom of the bowl should sit above the water and must not touch it. Heat the water gently and slowly melt the chocolate. Stir often.
    • Important: Do not let the water boil. If it starts to simmer, reduce the heat to very low or briefly remove the pot from the heat. Keep stirring until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
    • Melt the chocolate (microwave method): Place the finely chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat it in short intervals of about 20 seconds. Stir well after each interval. Stop heating as soon as most of the chocolate is melted, then stir until smooth. Do not overheat, as chocolate burns easily in the microwave.
    • Dip the oranges: Immediately dip the orange slices into the melted chocolate, coating them about halfway. Gently shake each slice over the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
    • Let set: Place the slices on the prepared baking sheet and let the chocolate set. Let the chocolate set at room temperature for 30-45 minutes, or chill in the fridge for 15-20 minutes for faster setting.

    Notes

    1. Oranges: I used one orange and one blood orange, but you can use just one type. Mandarin or clementine slices work well, too.
    2. Chocolate: I like these orange slices dipped in dark chocolate, but milk or white chocolate works too. If you use milk or white chocolate, add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the melted chocolate. Milk and white chocolate are thicker when melted. The coconut oil makes the chocolate smoother, so it coats the fruit more easily and sets in a thinner, more even layer.
    3. Variations: Sprinkle a few chopped nuts or a pinch of sea salt for a variation.
