brownies with monster cookies on top

Super delicious Halloween brownies topped with a super easy-to-make monster face topper, these chocolate glazed brownies are mixed in minutes, and you won't need a long time to make the monster toppers either.

As already mentioned when posting this hearty and delicious Halloween spider meatloaf, although I enjoy Halloween treats and food a lot, I really don't like disgusting-looking Halloween food.

But I like cute decorated food, I love to make this kind of decoration together with my children, and I love how happy they are to have such treats from time to time and to be able to say they've done those things themselves.

So, if you would like to do a little bit of Halloween baking with your children, these Halloween brownies are the thing for you. Easy to make, easy to decorate, and sooooo delicious to eat.

    Recipe ingredients

For making the Halloween brownies, you will need the usual brownie ingredients:

    ingredients for making brownies

To make the chocolate glaze, you will need:

    • Semi-sweet or dark chocolate: whichever you like best, you can also mix the two sorts; if you like that or if you have leftover chocolate, that has to go.
    • Heavy cream
    • Unsalted butter
ingredients for making chocolate glaze for cakes or brownies

To make the monster toppers for the Halloween brownies, you will need:

    • Chocolate-covered cookies: I needed 12 small round chocolate cookies.
      • You can use whatever chocolate-covered cookies you like or find; the only thing you have to consider is that they are not too large and that the top is rather smooth.
      • My cookies had a diameter of 3.5 cm/ 1.4 inches; slightly smaller or larger is fine.

    • 24 monster eyes made of sugar
    • 1 or 2 long red gummy spaghetti, for instance, from Haribo. (Amazon affiliate link)
    • 1 white gel tube. (Amazon affiliate link)
    • 1 silver decorating pen, optional; I used it because I was short one eye and to stick the eyes and mouths of the monster. For sticking, you can also use the white decorating pen or gel tube, or a little chocolate glaze.

    How to make Halloween brownies?

    • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius/ 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Line a square baking tin of about 23 - 24 cm/ 9 - 9.5 inches with parchment paper.
    • Melt the butter in a small pan.
    • Pour the butter into a mixing bowl and add white and brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt.
    • Whisk for about 2 minutes until the mixture is paler and fluffier.
    • In another bowl, mix together the flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, and baking powder. Sift them over the butter and sugar mixture.
    • Fold the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined; don't overmix the batter.
    • Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
    • Bake for 30-35 minutes until just set to the touch. Don't overbake.
    • Let the brownies cool in the pan for about 20 minutes.
    • Remove from the pan and let cool completely on a wire rack.
    • Only decorate when completely cooled.

    Chocolate glaze

I love this particular chocolate glaze. It tastes wonderful; it is easy to make, it is easy to spread on cakes or brownies, and it stays soft without being smudgy. It is rich, shiny, and glossy and makes any cake look pretty.

I've made it countless times already and used it to cover these delicious traybake chocolate cake squares as well.

    • Chop the chocolate and set aside.
    • Pour the heavy cream into a small pan. Bring it to a boil; this will happen super fast, so stand by.
    • Remove from the heat.
    • Add the chopped butter and the chocolate.
    • Stir well until the chocolate is completely melted and the glaze is smooth and shiny.
    • You can either glaze the uncut brownie and then cut the squares, or you can cut the squares and glaze each square individually.
    • I prefer the second version; I love it when a little bit of the glaze runs down the sides of the brownies.
    • To glaze the brownies, place the brownie squares onto a wire rack and place the wire rack on a large baking tray or on a large sheet of parchment paper.
    • This way, the excess chocolate glaze will drip onto the baking tray/parchment paper and not make a mess on your kitchen countertop.

    How to decorate them?

    • Cut the edges of the brownies to make regular, nice squares. This is optional, but the squares will look nicer if you do it. Don't discard the rest; eat them as they are.
    • Glaze the brownie squares, letting a little bit of the chocolate glaze drip down the sides of the glazed brownies.
    • Stick two eyes on each of the chocolate cookies.
    • Cut the gummy spaghetti into small pieces.
    • Use a little chocolate glaze or the white decorating pen or gel tube for sticking the eyes and the mouths on the monster cookies.
    • Use the decorating pen or gel tube to paint the teeth on the monster cookies.
    • Stick the cookies on the glazed brownies.
    • Let the glaze set slightly before serving the Halloween brownies.
